Coraline - The Movie That Almost Was

Escaping to a better plot eh?

Today we talk about Coraline. A movie, that myself and I am sure many movie goers have been looking forward to for the past year.  Unfortunately, I have some terrible news to report.  If you were hoping to see a stop-motion animated movie of the caliber of Nightmare Before Christmas you will be pleasantly un-surprised. Coraline is a beautiful achievement for animation [especially stop-motion], and it was quite a joy to see this movie in 3-D. The cons out weigh the pros, the story is almost as 'by-the-numbers' gets and the more interesting character [because there is really only one] is not fleshed out to any degree.  Coraline is not creepy.  It is not intriguing.  It is a slow moving bore of a movie.

Stop Frame Animator Makes an HD Movie The Old Fashioned Way

Light-Paint Piano Player from Ryan Cashman on Vimeo.

In lieu of me posting the new, fancy HD-movie ready D-SLR cameras; I thought it would be a good change of pace to show what can still be down with 'old technology' D-SLRs. I don't think I have to say how freaking difficult this is, but just in case...does anybody remember the California Raisin's commercials? Well those were actual built models...this guy, Ryan Cashman has a series of 20-30 second exposures, where in he lines them up and editted them into one movie which has his own music in it.  How's that for inspiring?  I believed he used a Canon Digital Rebel as well.

Tropic Thunder - Tom Cruise? Why?

Funny Looking At This Photo It Is Actually Hard To Find Nick Nolte.

Tropic Thunder is an Action movie.  If and when it comes out on DVD it should NOT be put in the comedy section.  I understand that there were jokes and laughs in this movie. Honestly upon watching this movie a second time, the humor aspect kind of faded on me.  The laughs were there, but the didn't stick with that kind of 'one-two punch' like they did a month ago when I watched a pre-screening.  What should be noted is how well the action looks [at times] throughout this movie.  The explosions the sounds the hundreds of thousands of bullets being effortlessly sprayed about.  The scenery is down right gorgeous. If there is any reason to be jealous of Blu-Ray player adopters it will be when this movie comes out on Blu-Ray in a couple months.
