Funk Music Documentary: Baby Charles, Sharon Jones...err & Grace Jones?

Thanks to the NRK for broadcasting this super-interesting documentary on funk music. Non-Norwegian don't fret, the majority of the documentary is in English. I love Nicole Willis and The Soul Searchers and I never knew Sharon Jones played the piano until now. Enjoy and spread the word.

You're Probably Wondering How El-P Linked Up With Justin Bieber...

Above is the now infamous song. A remix of Justin Bieber's "Baby." Its great. Enjoy it. I was going to make it the song of the day in my other blog post but this kind of deserves the back story. You know the strange thing about Twitter is actually what occasionally turns me off to the AD/HD oriented website.

Instant access to anything is a tweet away. For no reason other than the man's own amusement, famed hiphop producer El-P decided to share 'questionible advice' with The Biebs. Below is a small segment of how all of this happened. In tweet form [yuck...sickens me to even type the word]. The highlighted text are what pushes this whole thing over the edge and boom...classic remix.
Update 07-04-10 12:35 : If you'd like the actual .mp3 go here [while link is still active]: Justin Bieber - Baby [El-P Death Mix]

Relevant history after the jump.

What Is A Goldfrapp?

I spotted this on Sir Arthur Gies' twitter page and was wondering were we went wrong as a society. I sent it to my boss at work and he seemed to be at least more privy to this 'Goldfrapp' [which in gaming terms translates to 'majestic fart' give or take a vowel] group than I could ever hope. This is what the kids are into? This is how babies are made? Songs like this made by people like this confuse me.

80's fashion has long been heralded as humanities greatest evolutionary drawback, so I would assume that most popular 80's music functioned as a synthetic catalyst into what could only be described as...well Goldfrapp. But hey, I'm in my late twenties, maybe I am reaching that point where new-old music [where the new music is inspired/copied by an old aesthetic] doesn't quite strike the eardrums as pleasantly as they use to.

Seriously though, people like this?

Commercial Break: James Brown Gives A Dance Lesson

There going to be a lot of people who laugh at this. What you should know is a good majority of the moves James Brown is doing in this itty-bitty clip...I completely stole. I didn't know how to dance as a kid and when I seen old footage of James Brown, Rufus Thomas and The Temptations I would go in the kitchen [with the socks on, because that's how you get a good slide] and get to dancing. It wasn't until this clip popped up one of my friends facebook streams that I realized, "Wow, I took a lot from James Brown!" I probably wouldn't even like a lot of music I listen to know if it weren't for old tapes like these that are probably long lost treasures hidden in my childhood home.

Long Live Funk Music.

[sidenote: If anybody can hip me to this version of "If You Don't Work, You Can't Eat" I'd be very appreciative] update: Nevermind...I found it

J Dilla Documentary [via Stussy]

Always good to see like minded individuals talk about one my favorite musicians, J Dilla. The anniversary passed earlier this month and Stussy saw it only right to put out a series of interviews of all the talented minds around Dilla. It would have been nice to see Phat Kat, Black Milk and Guilty Simpson...all Detroit emcees that improved under the watchful eye of Jay Dee. I know its hard to documentaries. Getting Slum Village or Tribe interviews are probably harder than cold-fusion, but still...it would have been nice.

But I'll take what I can get.

A Wilco Show Review From A Guy Who Know's D*@k About Wilco

It probably goes without saying that I have never claimed to be a fan of Wilco. The day of their show at the Mershon Center, myself and my resident 'old school' Wilco-fan of a girlfriend, collectively forgot about the show. Guess it just goes to show you how much of a 'blip' on the radar a live Wilco show makes in our world.  With all this being said, this is where I say, "Wilco is one of the worst bands I have ever heard" or "How can anyone listen to this kind of crap?!" Although I am not a fan of 'this type' of music, I was intrigued for many reasons to go to a Wilco show. What kind of people go? What do people do at a Wilco show? What is the proper form of dress? Mind you, my only knowledge of shows of this caliber are of the funk and hiphop variety. Sure I have ventured to the occasional metal show, but nothing of this size and sophistication.

Creative Music + Creative Videos[Updated]

Two Weeks

Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks

Thanks to the rag tag bunch behind EpicFU for hipping me to most of this new heap of new videos and music. I don't have cable...and even if I did, I don't think I'd be watching music videos. Do they still show music videos on MTV/BET?

Music Wise:

I may be late, but I'm at least posting something.  Just in case the 7 of you reading this site didn't know.  My writing skills [or lack thereof] have been being spread at The Start Screen and the Pro Photo Show blogs.  My new favorite site has enlightened me to some new soul and funk music.  I strongly suggest you check out the free audio samples for Baby Charles and Kokolo.
